Frequently Asked Questions
Can I just take the certification?
Absolutely, (First certification testing will be in April, 2025) but it's suggested that you have at least 30-90 days access to the forum before taking the test so you can get fully educated on the process and pass it the first time. But you do NOT need to signup for the forum to become certified.
Can I just stay in the forum without getting certified?
Absolutely! The forum was created to be a full-benefit membership community. The certification training is there as a foundation, while all sorts of other posts, training assets, calls and more will be included in the main membership.
How much is the certification?
The certification is a one-time-fee of $97 (see weekend discount below), with an annual renewel of $20 per year thereafter. The renewal fee comes with a short mulitple choice test for updating certification.
What tools do I need?
Since this is a certification, we assume you already have the correct tools to build a watch. However, we do offer a full list of the minimal tools to help you get certified. The biggest ones you'll need (at least to understand an implement), are a timegrapher and pressure tester.
How will I be recognized when certified?
Each certification comes with a digital badge, completion certificate and you will be registered on the Trusted Watch Builders website with your badge number, name, current status and any contact information you provide. Furthermore, you will be added to the "Trusted Builders in Good Standing" list and shared in one or more of the Watch Builder Magazine editions via the Trusted Watch Builders website link.
Can I cancel my forum membership at any time?
Of course. The forum membership (whether monthly or annually) can be cancelled at any time. When you cancel, your membership will stay active until your last payment reaches its cycle. Please keep in mind that there are no refunds on the certification testing or membership.
How hard is the certification test and can I lose certification?
Since this certification is based around building, it's a very easy test to get through as it doesn't cover full restoration of movements. (although we will cover these things in the general forum.) We will also have you send in pictures of your build proving you understand the basics of the watch building and client care processes.
Losing certification is simple: Make counterfeits (we will cover this in detail), or screw your Clients over. These are the two main (and avoidable) causes of losing your credability and certification.
What else happens on the forum outside of the certification training?
The following for catagories are set as the foundation for the certification training on the forum. Each piece is made as its own complete section and can be viewed in any order.
Everything from setting up a build, making sure you have the right parts, to putting together a solid Client timepiece. Light modification, but no advanced movement assembly is covered, but WILL be shared in the general forum.
This section coveres how to make sure your timepieces are water tight. Gaskets, crystals, casebacks, crowns are all covered.
Learn how to regulate your Seiko NH series automatic movement, demagnatize, and deal with certain issues that may arise from Client wear and tear.
This section deals with everything from marketing for new Clients, to servicing repair or warranty work, to understanding how to close and service a completed sale.
